We are excited to announce the first in our series of Translational Neuroelectronics workshops. During this series, we will explore how modern electronics and advanced materials can be translated to benefit clinical care of patients, and society at large. Specifically, our first workshop will focus on utilization of soft and organic materials to establish an efficient interface with biological substrates, including the brain. We will then expand these fundamental insights to the development of novel, high-performance bioelectronic devices.
During this interactive event, we will have the pleasure to host Prof. George Malliaras as one of the pioneers and most influential figures in bioelectronics. He will deliver an invited lecture entitled “Technology for Bioelectronic Medicine”. This will be followed by a presentation from one of the promising next generation bioelectronics scientists, our very own PhD candidate, Claudia Cea. Her talk is entitled “Conformable, Implantable, Integrated Neuroelectronics” and will potentially serve as partial fulfillment of the requirements for her PhD degree. In addition, we will benefit from the insights of a panel of experts including Prof. Alberto Salleo (Stanford) and our dear colleagues Prof. John Kymissis (EE, Columbia) and Prof. James Schuck (MechE, Columbia).
Due to Columbia’s strong history of interdisciplinary ties between medicine and engineering in combination with the exciting line-up of speakers, we anticipate keen interest across our campuses. George Malliaras is the Prince Philip Professor of Technology at the University of Cambridge. He leads the Bioelectronics Laboratory, an interdisciplinary group of scientists, engineers and clinicians who translate advances in electronics to better tools for healthcare. George received a PhD from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands and did a postdoc at the IBM Almaden Research Center. Before joining Cambridge, he was a faculty member at Cornell University, where he also served as the Director of the Cornell NanoScale Facility, and at the School of Mines in France. His research has been recognized with awards from the New York Academy of Sciences, the US National Science Foundation, and DuPont, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Linköping in Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society and of the Royal Society of Chemistry and serves as Deputy Editor of Science Advances.
Claudia Cea is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. She comes from Italy, where she completed her Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pisa. She pursued her Masters of Science degree in Bioengineering in San Diego, focusing her research on the development of novel origami-based neural probes for epidural and intradural recording, as well as, neurotransmitter detection. Her current work at Translational NeuroElectronics Lab focuses on the development of fast and sensitive soft bioelectronics devices that interact with signals generated by the neural tissue.
